On Monday 13th October 1873, the retired Nottinghamshire MP Charles Paget and his wife Ellen were swept to their deaths from the North side of Filey Brigg, which they had been visiting with a local guide.
A memorial stone was placed at Agony Point, which is on the approach to the Brigg. It is now displayed at Filey Museum. The warning on it is as appropriate today as it was in 1873.
